Adventures of Gerry Pole

This guy, Gerry Pole! came and talked to us about his life, his involvment with Rotary International (I think in Iran it's called koloope' Ferfereh), his realtor/fixer upper business, his role as a road scholar, NASA communicator, and all in all the dude next door who chowed down on BBQed Buffalo w/ non other than LBJ(That's president Johnson to you).
Oh yes, he talked about the GEMs too. The crown jewels of Persia that is. No, they were not worn by Ms. Taylor. They were apparently kept in Shah's safe keeping in a cave or a sardAb some place in northern Tehran (indisclosed location). Isn't it ironic for for national treasure of a country to be kept in a ....
So he goes to Iran, gets commissioned by Mammad Reza to cataloge the jewels, he washes them with Tied, and does the Kodak moment thing. Of course he has help from 2 Japaneese profs. and the Canadian Museum. He spent 3 month in Iran and then another 4 month abroad to finish the work. Shah visited 4 times a week to make sure the work is progressing well. The result is a book of limited edition (100 or so) that was distributed to some heads of states and his majesty's own loved ones of course. The original templets were also destroyed so that the book would not be reprintd (insert your own judgment here).
Gerry (isn't it cool, we are on first name basis already) was claiming that about third of these jewels fled the country on chAr-das-pA and probably willingly too. Apparently, Mammad had grown attached to them but I suppose that's normal. the remainder are suppose to be still in Iran but no detailed news on them.
Enough verAji. I would like to thank Mrs. Beheshti on behalf of the 20 some odd people who showed up last night. We all benefitted from her grace and hospitality. We also offer our condolenses on the loss of her mother and wish her strength in this trying time.
Next Doreh: In two weeks, Fariba will talk about Psycology of achiement. She might use me as a study case!
